The call came from an unknown number. A man’s voice, clipped and official, said there had been an incident near her school gym. He told me to come immediately. He didn’t explain more. By the time I arrived, my hands were shaking so badly I could barely sign in.

Instead of taking me to her room, a police officer escorted me down a quiet hallway to a small, empty room with one chair and a narrow window in the wall.
“Before we speak,” he said gently, “I need you to peek inside discreetly.”

My stomach dropped.

Through the glass, I saw my daughter lying on a hospital bed. Her face was bruised, one eye swollen shut. Dried blood traced her hairline. A brace wrapped her neck, and her arms were dotted with IV lines. She looked impossibly small.

Harris was sentenced to prison.

The day it happened, Emma squeezed my hand and said, “I’m glad you believed me.”
