Three months after the accident, the darkness suddenly faded when I opened my eyes that morning. I could see again. But before I could celebrate, my hand touched a folded note on the bedside table. It read, “Don’t tell them you can see.” My heart started racing. Minutes later, the woman I had been calling Mom walked in with a strange smile and whispered, “Good morning, sweetheart.” That was when I realized something was terribly wrong.

Chapter 1 The Morning My Sight Returned

My name is Emily Carter, and three months ago my life went completely dark. A car accident on a rainy highway outside Portland Oregon took my eyesight in a single moment. One second I was laughing with my parents in the back seat, and the next I woke up in a hospital bed surrounded by voices and darkness that never lifted. The doctors said the damage might be temporary, but no one could promise anything. My parents decided to move us away from the city while I recovered. They rented a secluded villa deep in the woods outside Bend Oregon where it was quiet and peaceful. At least that was what they told me. Every day followed the same routine. My father left early to handle work calls while my mother stayed with me in the house helping me navigate the rooms and preparing meals. I depended on her for everything. The darkness forced me to trust every voice and every touch around me. Three months passed like that. Then this morning something impossible happened. I woke up slowly as sunlight warmed my face through the bedroom window. When I opened my eyes out of habit I expected the usual darkness. Instead I saw shapes. At first they were blurry and distorted like shadows moving through water. I blinked several times and the shapes slowly sharpened. The ceiling above me appeared first. Then the white walls of the bedroom. My breath caught in my throat. I could see. My hands trembled as I sat up in bed. The room looked unfamiliar even though I had lived in it for months. While I was still trying to process what was happening my hand brushed against a small piece of paper resting beside my pillow. Confused I picked it up and read the words written in shaky handwriting. Do not tell them you can see. My heart began pounding immediately. The note made no sense. Who had written it and why would they warn me like that. Before I could think further I heard footsteps approaching down the hallway outside my bedroom. Instinctively I lay back down and closed my eyes pretending to remain blind. The door slowly opened and a woman walked into the room. I forced myself to stay perfectly still as she came closer. Then I opened my eyes just a tiny bit. What I saw made my blood run cold. The woman standing beside my bed was smiling gently. But she was not my mother.
